1) Unplug

In this modern world, it’s obvious how most people are glued to their phones all day long. Scrolling through social media feeds or double-checking emails is the last thing they do before closing their eyes.

Every successful entrepreneur needs to know how to turn things off in the evening and put the day to rest. Studies have found that blue light from devices disrupts your sleep cycle, making you feel exhausted the next day. CEOs who want to be productive and have a great performance at work prefer to turn off their devices before going to sleep, or even earlier than that.

Arianna Huffington, creator of Huffington Post, disconnects from her phone before bed each night for an improved sleep. It’s the same for Sarah Chrisp, founder of Wholesale Ted, who has a rule to shut down her laptop at 6pm. She does this so she can focus on her friends and family that night, and give her the best performance after waking up.

2) Meditate

Meditating for just 5 minutes per night will give positive effects on your physical and mental health. Studies have found that meditation helps in calming and de-stressing the body while lowering your blood pressure. After meditating, you will feel happier, and it even helps with anxiety and depression.

Marc Benioff, founder of, mentioned during his Utah tech conference how important mediation is and how it should be part of your daily routine. He told entrepreneurs to “clear your mind, make room for some new ideas and get back to a beginner’s mind.”

3) Read

Reading before bed has great benefits for you, and this is why most successful people do it. First, it allows you to relax and slow your breathing which makes you more calm. This is because when you are reading, you feel like you are leaving your troubles behind since your mind wanders to somewhere else. Secondly, reading boosts your brainpower. It’s similar to exercising since working out is meant to improve your physical body while reading is for your mind. Lastly, reading can increase your creativity as it lets you imagine and broaden your mind.

Alexi Nazem, the co-founder and CEO of Nomad Health, claims that he usually falls asleep with a book in his hand. For Bill Gates, he says that he always makes time to read a book no matter how late it is in the evening, since he needs it to get a good night’s sleep.

4) Write

To wrap up your day, journaling can be useful as it allows you to reflect on the events that happened and reflect on it. This can help you learn about the mistakes you’ve made and know where you can do better next time.  On the other hand, you can also write to jot down the positive things that happened to show gratitude. Writing can also help you lower your stress since it releases tension before sleeping.

5) Plan

It’s a great habit for CEOs to plan out their day the night before a hectic day. They do this so that your mind will be ready to take action in the morning. This helps them have better time management, which is key to accomplishing many things throughout the day. For example, they list out 3 goals they hope to achieve for tomorrow. They make sure their ideas are organized and easy to read.

For Stephen Squeri, CEO of American Express, he also ends his nights by listing 3 things he wants to work on the next day so that he can focus on those important tasks right away.


Mastering a successful morning routine is not enough if you won't continue it until the evening.
