Successful Morning Routine of CEOs

Ever wonder why successful CEOs accomplish so many great things throughout their day? Turns out, how they start their day can really determine how productive they will be.

Successful Morning Routine of CEOs

If we take a look at each of their routines, we can see what they have in common and how they are all unique as well. In this blog, we will share the morning routines of 5 well-known CEOs, their similarities and differences, and what we can learn from them.

Bill Gates: Former CEO of Microsoft

Bill Gates starts his day by going on the treadmill for an hour, while watching DVDs from Teaching Company’s Great Courses series. After exercising, he reads through the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Economist. If he’s not working, he usually gets outdoors and plays tennis. He usually doesn’t eat breakfast, despite it being the most important meal of the day. However, if he’s hungry, he prefers eating Coco Pops, which is his favourite breakfast cereal.

Jeff Bezos: CEO of Amazon

Jeff Bezos’s morning routine is different in a way since he doesn’t set up an alarm. He just wakes up when his body decides to do it as he believes that your body needs to get enough sleep. After waking up, he reads the newspaper and drinks coffee. He then eats breakfast with his wife and 3 kids. He makes sure to spend time with family first before starting his work. He does not schedule any meetings early in the morning.

Elon Musk: CEO of Tesla and SpaceX

For Elon Musk, he wakes up before 7am and typically sleeps 6 hours at night. He then proceeds to his “critical emails” and calls whoever he needs to. He gives himself 30 minutes of emailing, then he grabs a coffee, showers, and heads to the office. His morning routine is different to Bill Gates since he doesn’t eat breakfast or exercises.

Mark Zuckerberg: CEO of Facebook

Mark Zuckerberg is up at 8am, and similarly to Elon Musk, he immediately goes through his phone. He checks his Facebook Messenger and Whatsapp. He only exercises 3 times a week in the morning, either he does a workout or runs with his dog. After that, he will have a quick breakfast to start his work day.

Warren Buffet: former CEO of Berkshire Hathaway

Warren Buffet starts his day at 6:46am, after getting 8 hours of sleep consistently. Surprisingly, he eats unhealthy in the morning. He doesn’t go for the typical coffee in the morning,  but he goes for a Coca-cola with ice.  He drinks around 5 12-oz cans per day. He also enjoys going to Mcdonald's for breakfast. An interesting reason why he does this is because he saw an actuarial study and learned that the lowest death rate was in 6 year olds, so he also wanted to eat like a 6 year old.

Similarities

Waking up early after having a healthy amount of sleep

Waking up early is said to improve your cognitive function. Having better cognitive function means you’re better in learning, thinking, reasoning, remembering, problem solving, and decision making.

Better sleep quality is also associated with waking up early. When you sleep the right way and do it consistently, your body will have time to repair itself. Your blood pressure, immune system, brain functions and mood will improve, which will make you have an energised day. You will have a deeper sleep at night and avoid sleep disorders.

Not only will you literally have a brighter day, but your mood will also feel brighter and more peaceful. Research shows that people who wake up in the morning feel happier, not just in the moment but in life overall.

No wonder why CEOs are so productive and successful.

Differences

Exercising

Of the 5 CEOs mentioned, only Bill Gates exercises every morning, while Mark Zuckerberg does it 3 times a week. The other 3 CEOs don’t feel the need to exercise to start their day. Everyone is different, so some prefer to workout in the afternoon or at night. That said, it is highly recommended to put exercise in your daily schedule since it has lots of benefits for you physically and mentally.

Having breakfast

Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg are the only ones mentioned that eat breakfast. The others are good to start their day with just coffee, although it’s Coca-Cola for Warren Buffet. Just like exercise, we all have different preferences. As long as what you’re eating or drinking in the morning makes you feel energized throughout the day, then you’re good. However, eating nutritious food is still the best choice if you want to have a healthy body.

Lessons we can learn from their morning routine

Take advantage of your time

What we can notice from all their routines is that they don’t waste any time. They make sure every part of their day is being used in the right way and has a purpose. When it’s time to wake up, even if they have lots of time in the morning, they don’t just sit around and stare at the ceiling, or watch tv. Their morning routine is made to prepare themselves for the day ahead.

Refuel your body

Whether it’s exercising, eating a nutritious meal, or drinking coffee or coke, all of these actions have one goal:  to help you  refuel and be energised. Everyone's body is different so you have to know yourself what will make you feel awake and more productive. The important thing is being able to have energy to put your best in all the tasks you have to do for the day. No CEO wants to be groggy or in a bad mood while working.

Be ready and determined

CEOs inspire us since they are determined and passionate about their work. They are always ready to tackle the day even if they know it will be difficult and many people depend on them. They don’t become lazy and think they can call-in sick.. They put on a powerful and positive attitude once they wake up.

Conclusion

The CEOs mentioned are one of the richest people in the world and are well-known for their brilliant success. However, when it comes to habits, they are also like everyone else on the planet. No matter your status in life, we all can implement habits that can lead us to success. We all do it differently so it’s up to us to make a routine for ourselves. Most importantly, it’s all about the mindset and setting the positive intention for the day.
