Some people have busy work schedules that are difficult to manage. Not only that, smartphones are always used so everyone is now more connected wherever they are. In the 1800s, before technology came to our world, people would leave their work once they are finished.
Times have changed and it’s now possible to stay in touch with everyone 24 hours a day. This means that people can still call or message you about work even though you’re supposed to be done. It can make you feel that you have little to no life outside of work.
And this is why it's important to have a balance between work and personal life.
Why is work-life balance important?
Better mental health. Flexjobs reported in their survey that 76% of respondents agree that workplace stress affects their mental health, leading to depression or anxiety, and 17% strongly agree. If you really value your health, you know that it is important not to work too hard to the point of a mental breakdown. Our human brain isn’t meant to feel stressed-out all the time. Once we feel stressed, our thoughts and emotions become negative and this will affect our work and every part of our lives. Improving your mental health will let you have a more positive outlook in life and makes you feel ready to accept any challenge you may have.
Better physical health. This is especially important if your work includes you being chained to a desk. Our body is made to move and get outdoors, so when we spend most of our time sitting indoors, then this can cause physical health problems. Also, part of creating a balance in your life means having time to eat healthy meals, sleep for long hours, and exercise. Having a healthier body will make you more energised to get more work done.
Improve relationships. Your personal life and the important people in it is very valuable. Working too much will make you feel more exhausted and it may be hard to be present when you are with the people you love. Having balance in your life means you still give quality time to them. Being in the moment while being your best self will improve your relationships with family, friends and colleagues.
Increase productivity and overall success. Working hard is different from working smart. Working too hard may make you think you are productive but if your work still has a lot of errors and mistakes in the end, then time will be wasted since more effort should be done to fix them. Working smart means you are being your best self while working and the quality of your work is excellent, since you are careful with your actions and have a schedule for good time management. Having a great work-life balance will make you more mindful to do your work effectively which will then lead to your success.
How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance?
Schedule your day. First, you should know how to make SMART goals, which means goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely. When making your schedule, make sure your goals are aligned with your tasks and that your day is balanced. Your schedule should also include short breaks throughout the day so you won’t feel overwhelmed and drained.
Establish boundaries. Know your reasonable and realistic limits when it comes to what you will and will not allow when you’re at work and at home. Communicate these boundaries with your colleagues, friends, and family so that they all understand.
Take care of your mental and physical health. Taking care of your body and mind is important as these can affect your work and personal life. Make sure you take time to exercise regularly, eat healthy meals, and sleep at least eight hours per night. If your schedule is really full and you don't have time to do these, then you can practice relieving stress and raising energy levels by taking short mediation sessions, by taking your vitamins, by replacing an unhealthy drink with just water, or many more activities that can be done easily and quickly.
Take some personal time off. Personal time is not a luxury, it is a necessity. Being able to give time to yourself will let you recharge so that you can improve productivity once you get back to work. Take time to do your personal hobbies and interests outside of work. Having interests outside of work will make you a more well rounded person and can also help with improving your skills which your work can benefit from as well.
Spend time with your loved ones. Schedule time with your family, same as how you assign meetings at work. It doesn’t have to be a grand event every time, what matters is that you are being physically and mentally present when you are spending time with them.
As a working adult, you will spend most of your lives at work. It’s then easy to let work take over your life. Never forget to constantly improve your work and personal life, so that you can always be your best self. It’s very important to be intentional with your time and make sure there is a balance so that every aspect of your life will be satisfied.
